Quick facts:
- John on his wines: “I think of each wine we produce as a gemstone with an innate sense of architecture, so our wines are never over-polished. The wines all begin with fruit, but it is their natural lines and sense of transparency which provide the extra dimension that makes them exceptional.”
- The Enfield project highlights particularly terroir-driven vineyards across the state of California.
- There’s close to two centuries of combined experience by the growers they partner with, lending them an extraordinary understanding of the terroir of each individual site.
Founded in 2010 as a family project of John, Amy, and London Lockwood, Enfield Wine Co. epitomizes the “new California” movement, with a focus on the vineyard and natural, expressive winemaking. Their belief in California terroir drives them to seek out distinctive vineyards from Napa Valley to the far Sonoma Coast and beyond, rather than focusing on a specific region. As John says, they find vineyards that have “a story to tell.” In addition to two estate-farmed sites, purchased fruit is sourced through partnerships with small growers who have in many cases been farming the same vineyard for decades, giving them an unparalleled understanding of the unique character of the site. Thoughtful harvest at the leading edge of ripeness allows for full flavors, while preserving precision and elegance. The goal is to produce pure, fresh, mineral-driven wines, with the range encompassing both exciting new flavors and respectful classics.
